Electrical repair

Electrical repair in Maidstone: signs you need an electrician

Most electrical faults give a warning before they fail completely. If you notice any of these, stop using the circuit and have it looked at.

  • A trip switch or RCD that keeps tripping, or will not reset
  • Lights that flicker or dim when an appliance starts up
  • Sockets or switches that feel warm, look scorched or crackle
  • A burning or fishy smell near a socket, switch or the fuse board
  • A tingle or shock from a tap, an appliance or a light fitting
  • An old fuse box with rewireable fuses and no RCD protection

Our electricians test the circuit, find the actual cause and explain what needs doing before we repair it. No guesswork, and no replacing parts that are not at fault.

Staying safe: if you see sparks or smoke, switch off at the consumer unit if it is safe to reach, and call 999 if there is a fire. For a power cut in your street, call 105.

FAQs

Questions people ask our electrical company

Which areas does your electrical company cover?

We are based in Boughton Monchelsea, just south of Maidstone, and work across the town and its villages every week: Loose, Bearsted, Barming, Coxheath, Langley, Sutton Valence, Aylesford and more. We also take on electrical work throughout Kent, including the Medway towns, Sittingbourne and Tonbridge. Our coverage page lists the places we visit most.

Do your electricians take on small jobs?

Yes. We do everything from small jobs to big ones: an extra socket, a new light fitting or a fault that needs finding, through to full rewires. You do not need a large project to call us.

Do you do commercial and industrial electrical work as well as domestic?

Yes. Heads Up Electrical is a domestic, commercial and industrial electrical contractor. Alongside house rewires and consumer units we wire shops, offices and rented property, and work on three-phase supplies, isolators and armoured cabling for workshops and industrial units.

My electrics keep tripping. Can you repair the fault?

Yes, electrical repair and fault finding is a large part of our work. A circuit that keeps tripping usually points to a faulty appliance, a damaged cable, damp getting into a fitting or an overloaded circuit. We test the circuit to find the actual cause, explain what we have found and then repair it.

How do I know if my house needs rewiring?

Common signs are an old fuse box with rewireable fuses, round-pin or scorched sockets, rubber or fabric-covered cable, lights that flicker and fuses that blow regularly. If your wiring has not been checked for many years, an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) will tell you its condition, and whether a full rewire, a partial rewire or a few repairs is the right answer.

How often should electrics be tested?

The usual guidance is every 10 years for a home you own and live in, and every 5 years or at each change of tenancy for a rented home. Landlords in England must have a valid EICR at least every 5 years. Shops and offices are normally inspected every 5 years, and industrial premises every 3 years. It is also worth having a test before you buy a property.

What are your opening hours?

We are open Monday to Saturday from 7am to 9pm, and closed on Sundays. Call 07840 188694, or use the Request a Callback form at any time and we will ring you back during those hours.

Is Heads Up Electrical a registered company?

Yes. Heads Up Electrical Ltd is a private limited company registered in England and Wales, company number 11607824, incorporated in October 2018. Our registered office is 24 Meadow View Road, Boughton Monchelsea, Maidstone ME17 4LJ.
